Recovering between workouts: sleep, rest days and active recovery

You improve during rest, not just during the effort. Simple ways to recover better.

Training tires you out, and recovery is when your body adapts. If you stack session after session without recovering, you eventually stall, or even go backwards.

Sleep comes first

It's the most powerful recovery tool, and it's free. Regular hours and enough sleep do more for recovery than any gadget.

Rest days

Keep at least one day a week without hard training, ideally two when you train a lot. A rest day isn't wasted: it's the day your previous sessions pay off.

Active recovery

A walk, a very easy ride or a mobility session lets you move without adding fatigue. It often feels better than staying completely still.

Watch for the signs

  • Fatigue that doesn't go away between sessions.
  • Performance dropping for no clear reason.
  • Losing the urge to train.

When that happens, easing off for a few days is often the best call. Volta suggests a light session or proper rest on your days off, and never puts three hard days in a row in your week.
