Warming up: why and how

Five to ten minutes that change the quality of the whole session. A simple three-part warm-up.

The warm-up is the first thing people skip when they're short on time. Yet it's what lets you start your first sets or first kilometers feeling ready instead of just getting through them.

What it does

It gradually raises your body temperature and heart rate, prepares your joints for the ranges you'll use, and switches on the coordination for the movements you're about to do.

Three parts

  • Raise: 3 minutes of light cardio (rope, rower, jog, jumping jacks).
  • Mobilize: a few dynamic movements for the joints that will work (hips, shoulders, ankles).
  • Rehearse: the workout's movements, unloaded or very light, before adding weight.

Match it to the workout

Leg day needs ready hips and ankles. Intervals need a few progressive strides. A WOD with pull-ups needs awake shoulders. The warm-up follows whatever comes next.

In Volta, every workout comes with a guided warm-up of three timed steps, built from the movements in that workout.
